About Hunter New England Local Health District

We provide public health services to the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid north coast regions of New South Wales. HNELHD provides services to over 1 million people, including over 60,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Is the only district in New South Wales with:

      A major metropolitan Centre

      A mix of several large regional centres

      Many smaller rural centres and remote communities

Our district's landscape is distinct, unique and impressive incorporating regions of the coast, valleys, mountainous ranges and agricultural rich plains offering a range of lifestyles to suit you. Our vision 'Healthy People: now and into the future' is a focus for our patients and staff.

Network 12 is closely affiliated with the University of Newcastle and the University Of New England Medical Schools.

Our home hospitals for Direct Rural Placements (RPR) include Tamworth, Maitland and Manning Base Hospitals.

Network Overview – Our Training Facilities

Network 12 is the largest hospital network in NSW for Junior Medical Officers, with a wide range of hospitals. Rural Preferential Recruits may be provided with opportunity to rotate into the Network General Rotational Hospitals. The home hospital sites for Network 12 are Maitland, Manning and Tamworth Hospitals (5 Term Home Hospitals). There are a wide variety of experiences in the network at each facility, which includes (*PGY2 Only Terms):

Armidale Hospital – Providing terms in General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Paediatrics. All terms at Armidale are PGY2 only.

Belmont District Hospital – Providing terms in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Medicine with Cardiology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Addiction Medicine, Anaesthetics with Emergency Medicine*, General Surgery and Sub-Acute Medicine. This is general rotational facility.

Calvary Mater Hospital – Providing terms in Acute Medicine, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Clinical Haematology, Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Medical and Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care, General Surgery.

Hunter New England Mental Health Services – Providing terms in mental health including at the Lake Macquarie Inpatient Unit, Newcastle Inpatient Unit, Mental Health Intensive Care* Unit, Older Persons Inpatient Unit, Mental Health & Substance Use Inpatient Unit and Intermediate Stay Unit.

John Hunter Hospital – Providing terms in Acute General Surgery, Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Community Care*, Emergency Medicine, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, General Paediatrics*, Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Surgery with Trauma, Clinical Governance*, Intensive Care* Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology & Dialysis, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Maternity & Gynaecology*, Maxillofacial/ENT surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatric Orthopaedics*, Paediatric Surgery*, Psychiatry Liaison*, Child Psychiatry* Rehabilitation Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Urology and Vascular Surgery.

Manning Base Hospital (RPR) – Providing terms in Anaesthetics with Emergency Medicine*, Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology*, Oncology, Nephrology and Dialysis, General Surgery, Urology, Psychiatry, General Paediatrics*, Rehabilitation Medicine and rural General Practice*.

The Maitland Hospital (RPR) – Providing terms in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynaecology*, Orthopaedics and General Paediatrics*.

Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital (RPR) – Providing terms in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Mental Health, Obstetrics & Gynaecology*, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics*, Rehabilitation Medicine, ENT Surgery, Urology, General Surgery, General Surgery with Ophthalmology and rural GP*.

Education and Training

Intern Boot Camp– Developing communication and teamwork skills needed to be effective in the clinical situations you will soon face, particularly after hours or on rural rotations.

Research Opportunities in Network 12

HNELHD is committed to supporting high quality health and medical research and the translation of research evidence into everyday clinical practice. We have the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) on the John Hunter Hospital (JHH) Campus. The prevocational Trainees have opportunity to participate in various research and quality and safety initiatives.

Support for JMOs

The prevocational Training network prides itself in providing a supported and structured training program in line with the National Training Framework, alongside HETI. We have various support available for JMOs including our own:

  • HRMOA – Hunter Resident Medical Officer Association.
  • HETI JMO Forum Representatives
  • Australian Medical Association Representatives
  • Dedicated JMO Wellbeing Support Person
  • Dedicated on site JMO Manager and Director of Prevocational Education & Training (DPET)
  • Dedication Network Support with a Network Manager, PVTN Director & a JMO Support Officer.
