About Hunter New England Local Health District

We provide public health services to the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid north coast regions of New South Wales.

HNELHD provides services to over 1 million people, including over 60,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

We are the only district in New South Wales with:

  • A major metropolitan Centre
  • A mix of several large regional centres
  • Many smaller rural centres and remote communities

Our district's landscape is distinct, unique and impressive incorporating regions of the coast, valleys, mountainous ranges and agricultural rich plains offering a range of lifestyles to suit you. Our vision 'Healthy People: now and into the future' is a focus for our patients and staff.

The Prevocational Training - Network 12 (PVTN) sits within Hunter New England Local Health District and is closely affiliated with the University of Newcastle and the University Of New England Medical Schools.

The PVT Network has 8 hospitals which trainees can rotate to, these include, Belmont, John Hunter, Calvary Mater – Newcastle, HNE Mental Health Services, Armidale and our home hospitals for Direct Rural Placements (RPR) which sit within Network 12, include Tamworth, Maitland and Manning Base Hospitals.

Network Overview – Our Training Facilities

Network 12 is the largest network in NSW for Junior Medical Officers, with a wide range of hospitals.Our aim is to provide a supportive and educational experience for our Junior Medical Officers in achieving General Registration and Rotations to support their career pathway.

Our Rural Preferential Recruits may be provided with opportunity to rotate into the Network General Rotational Hospitals.

Education and Training

The PVTN provide training to meeting the AMC National Framework. We have a group of dedicated educators and clinician who volunteer their time to present to our trainees each week. Please see below list of education sessions offered throughout the clinical year.

  • Comprehensive Intern Orientation, covering various essential topics to prepare interns as they commence their careers as doctors.
  • Intern Boot Camp focusing on developing communication and teamwork skills needed to be effective in the clinical situations you will soon face, particularly after hours or on rural rotations.
  • Network Intern Education Program – quarantined weekly education for Interns
  • Network Resident Education Program – quarantined weekly education for RMOs
  • In house Education sessions run at each facility by various department to assist interns interested in sub-specialty pathways

Working in Network 12 will give you exposure to the Hunter New England Region and help set up your future career opportunities by preparing you for excellent ongoing training within any of the vocational below networks:

Research Opportunities in Network 12

HNELHD is committed to supporting high quality health and medical research and the translation of research evidence into everyday clinical practice. We have the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) on the John Hunter Hospital (JHH) Campus. The prevocational Trainees have opportunity to participate in various research and quality and safety initiatives.

Support for JMOs

The prevocational Training network prides itself in providing a supported and structured training program in line with the National Training Framework, alongside HETI. We have various support available for JMOs including our own:

  • Dedication Network Support with a Network Manager, PVTN Director & a JMO Support Officer.
  • HRMOA – Hunter Resident Medical Officer Association.
  • HETI JMO Forum Representatives
  • Australian Medical Association Representatives
  • Dedicated JMO Wellbeing Support Person
  • Dedicated on site JMO Manager and Director of Prevocational Education & Training (DPET)
