Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Services
“We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians and community members of the land the Hospital is situated on and pay our respects to Elders, past, present and those emerging”
The Aboriginal Maternal Infant Health Service (AMIHS) provides ante-natal and postnatal care for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families or for families who identify as having an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander baby. We aim to provide individualised culturally appropriate support and education during pregnancy, after birth up to 6- 8 weeks postnatally.
Services provided by AMIHS include:
- Comprehensive and regular antenatal health checks,
- Booking in to maternity hospitals
- Ante-natal education
- Healthy lifestyle choices such as smoking cessation programs
- Referral and support to access other services
- Health promotion and community development activities
- Postnatal checks and support
- Parenting support
- Information on infant feeding and nutrition
Where available we work closely with Aboriginal Child and Family Health programs such as Building Strong Foundations (BSF) and New Directions to ensure a smooth transition of care for your family, with the goal to support families and children up to 5-8 years.
Our Team
- The AMIHS program is a culturally led service. Aboriginal Health Workers and Aboriginal Health Practitioners are both critical and integral to ensuring that Aboriginal people and communities receive culturally appropriate, and therefore more effective, health services.
- The AMIHS midwife works alongside Aboriginal Health Workers and Aboriginal Health Practitioners to provide culturally safe and competent maternity care for women.
- Some AMIHS teams have Social Workers and Lactation consultants with their team.
