John Hunter Hospital Surgical Services and Surgical Training
The Division of Surgery, at the John Hunter Hospital can offer a broad based intensive training programme for both Basic Surgical Trainees and Specialist Surgical Trainees.
As the regional trauma and tertiary-referral centre for the Hunter Valley and northern New South Wales, the hospital deals with a large number of complex cases. Most sub-specialities in Surgery are available within the Hunter New England Area Health Service, including Cardiothoracic, Colorectal, ENT, HPB and Upper GI, Maxillofacial, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Trauma, Urology, and Vascular. There is also a large amount of district hospital general surgical work at John Hunter as well as the peripheral hospitals (Belmont District, Maitland, Newcastle Mater Misericordiae) and rotations to Port Macquarie, Gosford and Taree.
John Hunter Hospital Trauma Service
John Hunter Hospital is the busiest Trauma Centre in New South Wales treating 400 severely injured (ISS >15) patients in 2005. It is the only Major Trauma Service (Level 1 trauma centre) outside Metropolitan Sydney. John Hunter Hospital is the only combined adult and paediatric trauma centre in NSW.
The hospital provides primary and tertiary trauma services for an extended area of the Hunter, Mid North Coast and New England Area Health Services. The hospital has 550 adult beds,101 paediatric beds, 9 operating theatres, and offers a range of trauma-related specialty surgical services including:

The Hunter New England Area Health Service is 20% of the land size of New South Wales and represents 10% of the State’s population.
The John Hunter Emergency Department treats in excess of 48 000 patients per/year. Twenty eight per cent are admitted to the hospital and 25% of those are trauma admissions.
Orthopaedic Trauma, John Hunter Hospital is our local Level 1 orthopaedic trauma centre and is immediately next door to the Royal Newcastle Centre. We accept trauma locally and from the North East sector of New South Wales. Our caseload varies between 60-90 orthopaedic trauma inpatients at any one time. To cater for this volume we have dedicated orthopaedic trauma theatre lists every day of the week.
