Possum Place Child and Vacation Care Centres

Mission statement

Possum Place Child and Vacation Care Centres provide professional support to the provision of health care through high quality care and education for the children of health service employees.  Our service provides extended hours and varying types of care.  This is inclusive of respecting and embracing diversity and encouraging open collaboration with all participants.

Hours of operation
  • The Child Care Centre is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays 
  • Child care is provided to children aged six weeks to six years, with up to 53 children at any time
  • The centre is open 52 weeks of the year, closing for public holidays, inclusive of NSW Health Picnic Day and excluding Newcastle Show Day 
  • The service operates on lower numbers during the two week Christmas/New Year vacation period – child care positions are booked for this period
  • Fees are not payable for centre closures or when child care is not booked during reduced numbers
  • Limited occasional child care positions are provided daily to assist employees requiring flexible hours e.g. rotating rosters.  Occasional care is an individual advanced booking system made available to families indicating this care preference on their waiting list application
  • Hours of attendance are set at time of enrolment according to the hours of employment for each family, not exceeding 10 hours.  Employees requiring extended hours must supply in writing an application which is supported by documentation from their supervisor
  • The Vacation Care Centre is open from 6.30am to 6.00pm during all public school vacation periods and pupil free days
  • Vacation Care is provided for children from the first school vacation period of attendance in kindergarten (i.e. April) until the last school vacation period immediately after completion of primary school education (i.e. January), up to 40 children/day
