Nursing with Hunter New England Mental Health

Hunter New England Mental Health Service (HNEMHS) is a comprehensive  integrated mental health service with a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, community and specialist services. It is the largest mental health service in New South Wales outside metropolitan Sydney, providing clinical and support services deep into rural NSW.

The service has approximately 975 full time equivalent staff with 7 major inpatient facilities. Staff work together to provide high quality mental health care in the community and are benchmark leaders in a variety of specialist fields with many innovative programs and NGO partnerships.

Nurses working across our region have access to ongoing education, conferences and seminars, and research resources/funding opportunities, in order to meet the growing needs in the community. Mental Health Nursing staff strive to ensure people are cared for with dignity in an encouraging and compassionate multi-disciplinary environment, focusing on a recovery based model, psychosocial interventions and evidence based practice.

Nurses make up the largest part of the mental health workforce engaged in clinical/service delivery, working at all levels in clinical, management, education and research roles, from hospital to community. Nurses form a vital link in partnership with clients and their families, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, general practitioners, primary health care workers, community services, non-government organisations, Department of Housing, vocational training and employment agencies.
