Take care while using Inverell Community Health Centre car park
29 September 2008
Visitors to Inverell’s Community Health Centre have been asked to take caution when using the facility’s car park.
A number of pine trees bordering the car park have been earmarked as potentially hazardous, with falling pine cones posing a risk to windscreens and visitors.
Inverell Community Health Manager, Denise Grant, said there had been a number of near-misses due to the dropping pine cones in recent weeks. One car sustained considerable damage when a cone fell on its windscreen.
The three pine trees responsible for the safety hazard are due for removal within the next month, however, visitors should take caution in the meantime.
"The car park is a well-trafficked area, with people young and old walking past the pine trees on their way to the Community Health Centre," Mrs Grant said.
"While no one likes having to remove three trees from the grounds, this measure will improve safety in the area and greatly lessen personal or property damage that falling pine cones can create."
According to Mrs Grant, a number of horticultural experts had indicated there was little choice but to remove the trees.
“Poor pruning methods used on the pine trees many years ago influenced their growth cycle. As a result, the tree branches have grown outwards not upwards, contributing to the pine cone problem,” she said.
“The Community Health Centre will plant new trees – away from the car park - to replace the pines after their removal. While the trees will be missed, our number one priority is the safety of visitors to the centre.”
