Physician services return to Glen Innes

23 September 2008

Glen Innes residents will have increased access to specialist care with the commencement of general physician outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations at the hospital this week.

Armidale-based general physicians Dr John Flynn and Dr Sanjiv Lath will attend Glen Innes Health Service three days per month.

Glen Innes Health Service Manager Cathryn Jones said the commencement of outreach services to Glen Innes would reduce the need for patients to travel away from home for outpatient appointments.

“Up until now, Glen Innes residents have been travelling away from home for specialist care,” Mrs Jones said.

“Now they will have just a short trip to their local hospital for the same services.”

It is also hoped that with Dr Flynn and Dr Lath’s help the number of hospital patients transferred away from home will also be reduced.

“Glen Innes residents have been transferred to Armidale, Tamworth and sometimes beyond for specialist care,” Mrs Jones said.

“We are hoping that in co-operation with Glen Innes GPs, hospital patients may be able to be managed in their home town by their GPs with the guidance of Dr Flynn and Dr Lath.”

General Manager of Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals Fergus Fitzsimons said the attraction of a full compliment of general physicians to Armidale meant their expertise could be shared at Glen Innes.

“We’re very pleased that our strong compliment of staff at Armidale Hospital are helping to ensure patients in our region are able to access the best possible care,” Mr Fitzsimons said.

“Dr Flynn and Dr Lath are talented physicians, and we thank them for their dedication to ensuring the communities surrounding Armidale have good access to their services.”

Dr Flynn has been working in Armidale for about 30 years.

Dr Lath is originally from India and most recently spent four years working in Mauritius, before moving to Armidale and receiving his Australian Fellowship. He has a special interest in cardiology.
