Off-site parking popular with community

One year after its introduction as a three month trial, Hunter New England Health’s off-site parking service for the Rankin Park campus is continuing and proving popular with the community.

The free off-site parking service operates from Energy Australia Stadium between 9.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, and the shuttle bus completes one round trip to the hospital every 40 minutes.

Director of Corporate Services James Brown said Hunter New England Health is hoping the service’s success to date is an indication that people are going to continue to take advantage of it.

“Since its introduction in September last year, we have extended the operating hours and increased the frequency of the shuttle buses,” Mr Brown said.

“We’ve received some very positive feedback from users and patronage has steadily increased from between six and 10 people each day, to about 50.

“Off-site parking has also proved popular with a number of staff who choose to park at Energy Australia Stadium and catch the shuttle bus to and from work each day.”

Charlie Moffat from Adamstown said he has used the off-site parking service several times during the last few months to attend outpatient appointments at the Royal Newcastle Centre.

“The bus drops you off and picks up right at the front door of the hospital - it’s so convenient, especially on rainy days,” Mr Moffat said.

“It’s a terrific service and I’m 100 per cent sure I’ll use it again, even if it’s just to visit someone in hospital.”

Another satisfied user is Mrs Jannette Whiteford from Islington.

“It can be hard to find a park at the hospital on weekdays, so my husband and I decided to try the shuttle bus service,” Mrs Whiteford said.

“It was absolutely brilliant and the bus driver was so happy and helpful.

“I’m more than happy to recommend the off-site parking service – I don’t think we’ll ever drive to John Hunter again.”

The Rankin Park Campus includes John Hunter Hospital, John Hunter Children’s Hospital, the Royal Newcastle Centre and Rankin Park Hospital.
