Wee Waa Community Hospital joins the relay team

Staff members from the Wee Waa Community Hospital are preparing to hit the paddock to raise thousands of dollars for people suffering from cancer. For the first time, Wee Waa will enter a team in Relay for Life to be held at the Wee Waa sporting complex on Friday 31 October.

Wee Waa Community Hospital Health Service Manager, Tim Whyte said the goal is for 37 teams to walk non-stop for 24 hours, hopefully raising up to $30,000.

“I would like to call to arms other staff members from the Mehi Cluster to take up the challenge, join a team, set up camp and to support the fundraising effort,” Mr Whyte said.

The eleven member team is aptly named the Heartbeats, Registered Nurse Kylie Greste will take the helm as captain, with Tim Whyte, Helen Haire, Marika Sadler, Robyn Allen, Abbey O’Brien, Dean Mussett, Janelle Schwager, Jacqui Sevil, Umaila Shweiki and Anne Varcoe all hoping to add more than $2000 to the relay kitty.

Joining the walking challenge is another team called Twenty/20 put together by Senior Registered Nurse Alison Chaplin.

“Relay for Life is a wonderful opportunity for hospital staff to fundraise for a very good cause. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer and participating in the Relay for Life shows great support towards the local community and the fight for cancer,” Ms Chaplin said.

“I hope we can donate around $1850 to the cause, I’ve enlisted by family members to take part, but there is always room for more energetic people to join the team,” she said.

The Wee Waa Relay for Life kicks off at 6pm on Friday 31 October at the Wee Waa Sporting Complex with the Survivors Walk and the Candlelight Ceremony of Hope starting at 8pm.
