Service for organ donor families and transplant recipients
An ecumenical service of remembrance and thanksgiving for organ donor families and transplant recipients, together with health staff, will be held at Christ Church Cathedral this Sunday 19 October 2008. Hunter New England Health Organ and Tissue Donor Co-ordinator Nicole Coleman said the service is an opportunity to remember those who have donated organs and to celebrate the life-saving gift they have given. "The service will involve some guest speakers sharing their personal experiences of organ donation including John Howlett whose wife was an organ donor," Ms Coleman said. "Mrs Howlett’s last wish of helping others in need saved the lives of five people. "Ten year old twins Jayde and Tahlay Bird will speak about their special mum who was also an organ donor," Ms Coleman said. "The service is one of thanksgiving for members of the community and their families who have received organ donations. During the service John Miller and his daughter Andrea will talk how their lives were saved by liver transplants. "As part of the service twins Jayde and Tahlay will be releasing one hundred butterflies for each donor and each of the subsequent transplants that have provided a new beginning of life in 2008. "These butterflies represent the memories of those who have donated recently and in the past at Hunter New England Health," Ms Coleman said. Members of the community whose lives have been touched by organ donation are invited to attend the service. The service will be held on Sunday 19 October 2008 at 2pm at Christ Church Cathedral, Church Street, Newcastle. MEDIA NOTE: Media are invited to attend the service. A photo opportunity will be available at the releasing of the butterflies at about 2.45pm. Please call Sharna McCarthy on 4921 4501 to register your interest in attending. Hunter New England Health Organ and Tissue Donor Co-ordinator Nicole Coleman will be available for interviews on Friday 17 October and Sunday 19 October from 12pm-1pm and 4pm-4.30pm.
