No horsing around at Scone

Despite struggling with the massive impact of Equine Influenza, the Scone horse racing industry has once again rallied to support the local community, by donating money to purchase medical equipment to Scone District Health Service.

Emirates Park and Scone Race Club generously donated $72,000 to Scott Memorial District Health Service, which will provide the community with a new portable SonoSite M – Turbo ultrasound machine.

Health Service Manager of Scott Memorial District Health Service Judy Bernasconi thanked Emirates Park and Scone Race Club for putting their full support behind the Health Service.

“The ultrasound machine is a very advanced piece of technology. The compact system delivers revolutionary image quality and can be taken straight to the patients’ bedside, which means people receive a faster diagnosis and treatment,” Ms Bernasconi said.

Chairperson of the Medical Staff Council at Scott Memorial District Health Service, Dr Paul Beiboer said the tyranny of distance often means diagnostic tools are difficult to provide to Scone patients in a timely manner.

“This new ultrasound tool provides on-site assistance to local medical officers treating people with obstetric and acute problems and it also has a huge potential with helping with spinal anaesthetics,” Dr Beiboer said.

Vice President of Scone Race Club, Arthur Mitchell said Emirates Park and Scone Race Club have supported Scott Memorial District Health Service for many years by donating funds to purchase new equipment.

“We were made aware of the need for a significant piece of equipment and we decided to contribute funds for the next three years to purchase the ultrasound machine,” Mr Mitchell said.

"The quality of care our community receives from Scott Memorial District Health Service staff and the local doctors is wonderful and we believe we must support them in every way possible,” he said.

The ultrasound machine was put through its paces last week when medical staff from Scott Memorial Hospital gave a demonstration to representatives of Emirates Park and Scone Race Club.
