National award for Dungog community service
27 November 2008
A free community laundry service for palliative care patients in the Dungog area has won a national award recognising outstanding quality improvement in Australian healthcare.
The laundry consortium was this week (NOTE: Thursday, 27 November 2008) named the winner of the non-clinical service delivery category of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards annual Quality Improvement Awards.
A partnership between Dungog Community Hospital, Dungog NeighbourCare and Dungog Palliative Care Volunteers, the project has enabled the much needed service to expand from using an aged washing machine in a dilapidated old garage on the Dungog Hospital site, to a well equipped laundry in a purpose built, modern facility.
Hunter New England Health’s Chief Executive Nigel Lyons congratulated all those involved in the consortium.
“It is a wonderful example of what community partnerships can achieve,” Dr Lyons said.
“The project has increased the capacity of the volunteer-run service, helped palliative care patients to remain at home and provided a cost-effective, affordable linen service for the aged community generally at Dungog.
“This national award is a significant achievement for the staff at Dungog Hospital and the other members of the consortium who have made a valuable contribution to improving the quality of care in their local community.”
The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards is Australia’s leading health care accreditation agency. Its quality awards recognise outstanding achievement in quality activities, programs, projects or strategies in healthcare organisations.
The awards were presented at the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards’ annual dinner in Sydney on Thursday night.
