Help is at hand for life's problems
25 November 2008
Everything from sexuality to hallucinations, family therapy to eating disorders will be up for discussion when psychologists from across the region gather in Newcastle this week.
Finding ways to address depression within the community is another aspect of the psychologist’s professional day, which is being hosted by Hunter New England Health in conjunction with the University of Newcastle.
More than 140 psychologists from a range of sectors are expected to converge on Newcastle University on Wednesday, 26 November 2008.
Clinical psychologist and member of the organising team Dr Karen Calabria, from James Fletcher Hospital, said the present economic climate and stress of the financial crisis was placing extra pressure on people.
“Currently, one in five people will experience a major depressive illness over their lifetime,” Dr Calabria said.
“Psychologists across the area are looking for ways to decrease these rates of depression within the community.
“We can do that by providing improved access to our services and also enhancing the care we provide to our clients through becoming more skilled in identifying the underlying causes for depression.”
She encouraged anyone experiencing depression or other problems in their lives to seek help.
“Psychologists work in a range of settings, including community health, mental health, at hospitals, in private practice, as well as in research and health promotion.
“You might be suffering depression, anxiety, grief and loss, or drug and alcohol problems. A psychologist will work with you to help you clarify the problem and the best way to deal with it,” Dr Calabria said.
