Coping with grief at Christmas time

24 November 2008

December is the festive season and is considered a universal time for the gathering of family and friends.

However, Christmas is not always a happy occasion, especially when grieving the loss of a loved one.

To help manage this grief, a number of free workshops will be held throughout the Lower Hunter for people who want some extra support leading up to Christmas.

Community Health social worker Nicole Sattler said the workshops would provide opportunities to discover strategies for coping with grief during the Christmas season.

“By meeting together in a workshop we hope to reduce the sense of isolation that people often feel at Christmas time,” Nicole said.

“Some of the strategies that we teach can also be used during other significant times of the year, like birthdays and anniversaries.”

The workshop presenters – Nicole Sattler and Melissa Davis – are social workers with experience of working with people who have suffered loss and grief.

“Similar workshops have been held in the Lower Hunter and Coalfields over the past few years and have received overwhelming responses,” Nicole said.
