X-ray upgrade brings a safer, more comfortable service

30 May 2008

People having x-rays at Tenterfield’s Prince Albert Memorial Hospital will soon notice a new state of the art x-ray unit.

Hunter New England Imaging’s chief radiographer based at Tenterfield, Karen Copelin, said the new technology will replace the existing x-ray unit which is over 25 years old.

"The new equipment, funded by Hunter New England Health, is an important part of the x-ray equipment replacement strategy by Hunter New England Imaging Service," Karen said.

The general purpose x-ray unit is valued at $69,000 and will provide benefits not only to patients but also to the radiographer operating the equipment.

Karen said the new technology will deliver a lower radiation dose to patients and the improved ergonomics will make having an x-ray more comfortable for both patients and operators of the equipment.

"The installation of this new equipment will complement the recent renovations to the radiology department at Tenterfield Hospital and will provide the community with a high quality x-ray machine.

The equipment upgrade will begin on Monday (2 June) with the removal of the old equipment and installation of the new unit taking four days.

During the installation period a limited emergency x-ray service will be available using a mobile x-ray unit at Tenterfield Hospital.

"During this time, we’ll also put in place alternate arrangements for people requiring urgent x-ray examinations that can’t be performed on the Tenterfield mobile unit," Karen said.
