Wildlife and other art adorns hospital corridors
A photographic exhibition highlighting the wildlife of the Southern Ocean and Sub-Antarctic islands of Australia and New Zealand is one of three Arts for Health exhibitions that will be officially opened at John Hunter Hospital tomorrow evening.
Natural history writer and photographer Inger Vandyke said she endured extreme weather conditions and visited some of Australia’s wildest, uninhabited seabird breeding islands during her journey to capture the images for her Southern Ocean exhibition.
“Southern Ocean is a series of fifty images depicting the different creatures that spend the majority of their lives battling the heavy seas or cyclonic winds that characterise the islands of the Antarctic Convergence,” Inger said.
John Hunter Hospital Arts for Health Coordinator Pippa Robinson said as well as Inger’s spectacular photographs, an exhibition of paintings by Shirley Wilson titled Walking the Corridors, and a set of three clay sculptures created by Megan Hope will be opened tomorrow evening.
“Shirley Wilson’s inspiration for her paintings came to her when her husband was ill and she was spending a lot of time at the hospital, walking the corridors and looking at the art exhibitions,” Ms Robinson said.
“She found the distraction of the artwork very helpful and through her own exhibition she hopes to give such healing help to others and to thank everyone at John Hunter Hospital for their wonderful care.”
Ms Robinson said Megan Hope’s work was inspired by English artist Henry Moore who is renowned for his abstract sculptures.
“Megan is a young artist who has just finished studying art at TAFE and she has a real interest in clay, particularly abstracted work,” Ms Robinson said.
Ms Robinson said the launch of new Arts for Health exhibitions is always an exciting time for the artists involved and the hospital community.
“These are first–time solo exhibitions for all three artists,” Ms Robinson said.
“They are all looking forward to tomorrow night’s opening and the opportunity to share their work with our patients, visitors and staff.”
Members of the public are welcome to meet at the piano in the Royal Newcastle Centre foyer at 5pm on Tuesday 27 May and participate in a tour of the artworks, which will be on display in the John Hunter Hospital/Royal Newcastle Centre until the end of July.
