Guyra MPS enrolled nurses
29 May 2008
Two women have graduated from a12 month nurse training program based at Guyra Multi Purpose Service as Endorsed Enrolled Nurses.
Cathleen Mills and Justine Brooks graduated on 2 May along with six other Trainee Enrolled Nurses, at a ceremony at Gunnedah Civic Hall in the presence of family, friends and nursing colleagues.
Cathleen was awarded her Endorsed Enrolled Nurse Certificate with distinction, having achieved the highest academic achievement from the group of graduates.
Prior to doing the Trainee Enrolled Nursing training, Cathleen and Justine both worked as an Assistant In Nursing (AIN) and moved into this field of work because they wanted a challenge.
"It’s never too late, you’re never too old, and you never know what you can do until you try," Cathleen said.
Both women agree that the program of study and work in the hospital was an amazing learning curve, juggling family and commitments, but was well worth it in the end.
Part of their training involved endorsement to conduct higher order nursing duties on top of their Enrolled Nurse qualifications, such as dispensing some medications to patients.
Guyra MPS manager, Tessa Capsanis, congratulated the two new Endorsed Enrolled Nurses, saying nursing is a career with great potential.
"Most aged care nursing is provided by Enrolled Nurses these days. In recognition of the range of skills required in aged care, there has been a move to up-skill Enrolled Nurses with additional endorsed skills which would normally have been performed only by Registered Nurses.
"Not only does this additional endorsement take some pressure off senior Registered Nurses, it also helps to ensure our patients receive better care when they need it.
"We are pleased that these nurses have agreed to stay on at Guyra MPS as permanent nursing staff, and will continue to undertake training to enhance their nursing skills," she said.
