Excitement builds for the completion of Stage One

Stage one of the Merriwa Multi Purpose Service (MPS) redevelopment is on track for completion by the end of June 2008.

Before the completed section is handed back to Hunter New England Health for occupancy, there will be a four-week period where some patients may need to be transferred to other facilities for care.

This will enable staff to move equipment and fittings from the existing building into the new facility.

Health Service Manager for Merriwa Community Hospital Cheryl Mead said the move would be undertaken as swiftly as possible, to cause minimal disruption to patient care.

“During this short time, we will be relocating some of the services provided at the site to ensure a smooth transition to the new section of the MPS for both patients and staff,” Ms Mead said.

From Monday 2 June until Monday 30 June, all acute admissions will be transferred to either Denman or Scone health services.

“During this time, we will be moving into our new facility, which will be a busy, but exciting time for both patients and staff,” she said.

“I apologise for any inconvenience caused to the community for this, however we will be maintaining our aged care beds during this time as well as 24 hour access to the Emergency Department,” Ms Mead said.

The new section will be open for admissions Monday 30 June 2008.

Work to date has included the initial stages of construction of the Medical Centre and Community Health section at the front of the hospital, which will eventually be co-located with the NSW Ambulance service.

“This is a very exciting time for our community to see the progress of our health service,” Ms Mead said.

“Hospital staff, patients and the community have been very patient and understanding during this process, and I thank them sincerely for their ongoing cooperation,” she said.
