Wake Up to inequality and opportunity
This evening at John Hunter Hospital, University of Newcastle global health student group “Wake Up!” is launching Australia and Beyond, an exhibition of photographs taken by students during their medical elective placements in developing countries and rural Australia.
As part of the launch, the 50 photographs will be judged and prizes awarded in the categories of Medicine Related, Community and Cultural, Humour and Miscellaneous, and Picturesque.
Wake Up! Secretary Elaine Kwan said the exhibition tells an important story.
“Australia and Beyond provides a focal point to raise community awareness and activism around global health inequalities,” Ms Kwan said.
“At the same time, the photographs also showcase the opportunities available through medical elective placements.”
During the evening, members of the student group will be assembling 1000 “birthing kits” for distribution to mothers in Vietnam through Zonta International, a global organisation working to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy.
“These kits include basic items such as gloves, soap, sterile plastic sheets – simple things that we take for granted in Australian hospitals,” Ms Kwan said.
Wake Up! is a not-for-profit organisation that was established in 2005 after the inaugural Australian Medical Students’ Association Developing World Conference in Sydney.
The group functions as an advocacy and education student group run by medical students at the University of Newcastle. It conducts special events, holds information sessions, coordinates the supply of medical equipment to communities and acts as a student resource for information on global health issues.
Australia and Beyond is on display until the end of April as part of the John Hunter Hospital Arts for Health Program.
