Health Chief congratulates Tablelands staff

2 April 2008

Hunter New England Health Chief Executive Dr Nigel Lyons and Director of Operations Tracey McCosker will visit the Tablelands Cluster this Friday to congratulate staff on their recent accreditation success and become familiar with local issues and concerns.

The day’s schedule will take Dr Lyons and Ms McCosker to Health Services at Armidale, Guyra, Emmaville and Glen Innes, where he will meet with staff and present them with their recently acquired accreditation certificates.

Dr Lyons said all health facilities in NSW are audited under the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS).

"Health service facilities within the Tablelands Cluster were the first of our clusters to receive the maximum four years accreditation with no high priority recommendations.

"I am very proud of this remarkable achievement. It takes huge commitment and cooperation to achieve this sort of result.

"It demonstrates the commitment of all staff to strive toward the common goals of the health service, as well as a commitment to provide the highest possible standard of care to their local communities," Dr Lyons said.

Accreditation is based on an audit of 58 criteria divided among three categories – clinical, corporate and support services, leaving no stone unturned in the way health care is delivered.

Dr Lyons said he was pleased to be able to present the Accreditation Certificates at each site.

"Meeting with staff is important for me, as it helps to create a more unified Area Health Service, where each staff member feels part of wider organisation. Getting to know local staff is an important part of that, and it’s a real bonus to be able to give them a pat on the back at the same time," Dr Lyons said.

Dr Lyons and Ms McCosker will also use the Tablelands tour to meet with medical staff in Glen Innes. The purpose of this meeting with general practitioners and visiting medical officers is to discuss the delivery of health care in the Glen Innes area, and to again congratulate them on the amazing work they do.

"I am particularly keen to personally congratulate the surgeons, anaesthetist and on-call doctors and nursing staff who were involved in the recent life-saving treatment of a man with crushed internal organs after a horse accident in Deepwater.

"Having this level of expertise in a small rural community is an amazing asset to the district," he said.
