Endoscopy service on their way for Glen Innes
26 March 2008 Hunter New England health Chief Executive Dr Nigel Lyons said today that he is delighted that GP Surgeon, Dr Edward Or is offering to support the Glen Innes community with his surgical skills, now that he has moved to Glen Innes. Dr Or has also offered to provide endoscopy services at the hospital, which would allow exploratory examinations of the digestive tract. Dr Lyons said Hunter New England Health is committed to the implementation of endoscopy services for Glen Innes, and has spoken with Richard Torbay who also confirmed how important this service is for the community. "Before this service can commence, we will need to have two gastroscopes and three colonoscopes, plus an additional sterilisation unit. "Negotiations are already underway to acquire the equipment needed and an order is likely to be placed by the end of this week," Dr Lyons said. "This would allow Dr Or to commence endoscopy clinics from Glen Innes in the near future," Dr Lyons said. Dr Lyons said once the order is placed for the new equipment it could take up to two months to arrive from the supplier in America. He said the Area Health Service anticipates that this new service will support existing endoscopy services at Inverell and Armidale as well. "We believe that the existing sterilisation unit at Inverell will be sufficient for the additional work being undertaken there," he said.
