Community’s chemotherapy unit is complete

After more than a year of fundraising efforts, the refurbished chemotherapy day stay unit at Muswellbrook District Health Service will be officially launched next week by Chief Executive of Hunter New England Health Dr Nigel Lyons and community advocate Wendy O’Connell.

Residents, businesses, sports and community organisations across the Upper Hunter have raised more than $83 000 to beautify the chemotherapy unit at Muswellbrook District Health Service.

Upper Hunter Cluster General Manager and Health Service Manager for Muswellbrook District Health Service Dr Debbie Jaggers said the refurbishment was a product of a dedicated community and the efforts of a number of inspirational community leaders.

“It’s a wonderful outcome for Hunter New England Health to work in partnership with local community groups on a project which is of major importance for many families across the Upper Hunter.

“The fundraising drive which has been undertaken really is a testament to people power and the unrelenting support of the Upper Hunter community,” Dr Jaggers said.

Design of the refurbished chemotherapy unit was coordinated by a local committee, including staff from Muswellbrook District Health Service, Hunter New England Health management and consumer representatives.

New fixtures and fittings will bring the treatment and waiting rooms in line with similar, modern facilities.

New equipment purchased for the room includes two new chemotherapy chairs, patient tables, two dressing trolleys, a new emergency resuscitation trolley, individual patient fans, and an upgrade to lighting and electrical equipment such as computers.

Dr Jaggers said a majority of the fundraising for the project had been driven by community advocate Wendy O’Connell.

“On behalf of the staff and patients of Muswellbrook District Health Service, I would like to express my sincere thanks for Wendy’s dedication to this project,” Dr Jaggers said.

Mrs O’Connell said she, along with a number of community groups, had been fundraising for the project for over 12 months, and the success was attributable to all who contributed.

“I can’t single out anyone to thank,” Mrs O’Connell said.

“Everyone was so important. The show of support from the community, the whole district, has just been overwhelming,” Mrs O’Connell said.

Members of the community are invited to view the refurbished chemotherapy unit which will be open to the public between 3pm and 4pm on Thursday 3 April.

Media: Media are welcome to attend the launch, which will take place at 2pm Thursday 3 April in the library at Muswellbrook District Health Service (second floor). A photo and interview opportunity will be available.
