Community leaders find way forward for health communication
20 March 2008 Unanimous praise was received from community representatives of health committees in the Lower Mid North Coast (LMNC) who attended a joint meeting last week in Taree. Members of the Community Forum on Health (CFoH) and Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) from each local health facility attended the meeting which discussed the changing demographics of the area and the efforts being made by Hunter New England Health to better meet the needs of the local ageing communities. Chairman of the LMNC Community Forum on Health Phil Webster said he was particularly impressed with the presentations outlining the challenges in providing services to the ageing population and the increasing number of people falling victim to chronic diseases. "I thought I was aware of most of our services, but I learned a lot," he said. The brainstorm session at the end of the day allowed participants to voice their need to become better known within their community so that they can effectively advocate for their community’s health needs. In an effort to aid communication between the various groups across the cluster, participants decided to nominate a representative from each Local Health Advisory Committee to attend the cluster Community Forum on Health meetings. Better communication between the groups is believed to provide an opportunity for health representatives to become better informed on shared health concerns across the Lower Mid North Coast Cluster and to maximise their efforts by developing shared priorities. Members of the community are welcome to attend Local Health Advisory Committee meetings at their local health facility - details available from local hospital or community health centre. Or, interested community members can attend the Community Forum on Health - please call Chairman Phil Webster on 6555 3651.
