Staff boost for Gunnedah health services

24 June 2008

Gunnedah Health Service is now offering a full compliment of allied health services, with the employment of a new speech pathologist and physiotherapist.

Angela Berry grew up in Gunnedah and recently returned to offer speech pathology services while physiotherapist Mercy Murombedzi moved to Gunnedah from Auckland, New Zealand.

Gunnedah Health Service manager Carole Young said the addition of Angela and Mercy to the staff was a significant step in providing the most comprehensive range of services possible.

“It’s wonderful that we have attracted two more experienced staff to join Gunnedah Health Service,” Mrs Young said.

“In an environment in which it’s becoming increasingly difficult to attract specialist staff to rural areas, their employment has been a great achievement.

“It just goes to show that the caring, professional attitude of staff at Gunnedah Health Service and the lifestyle Gunnedah can offer are helping to attract experienced health professionals to the area.”

Originally from Zimbabwe, Mercy Murombedzi has been working in acute hospital and rehabilitation services in Auckland for the past six years.

She said she had the option of working in Queensland and Sydney, but Gunnedah was her town of choice.

“Gunnedah is a lovely country spot,” Mercy said.

“The staff here are very professional and care about the patients so I thought it would be a great place to start learning about Australian health.”

New speech pathologist Angela Berry moved back to Gunnedah after working for North Coast Health (based at Evans Head) and North Sydney Central Coast Health Service (based at Manly).

She said it was great to be home where it only takes her two minutes to get to work.

“Gunnedah offers a great lifestyle – it’s good to be home,” Angela said.
