Manilla one step closer to integrated service
4 June 2008
Hunter New England Health welcomes the allocation of $3 million in initial funding (as part of an $18 million project) for the redevelopment of Manilla Health Service.
The funding announced in yesterday’s State Budget, will allow Hunter New England Health to finalise detailed construction plans and begin building the community’s new integrative Multi Purpose Service (MPS) and HealthOne facilities in the coming financial year.
The Manilla MPS will feature:
• Acute care
• Emergency department
• Redeveloped obstetrics unit
• Residential aged care
The Manilla HealthOne is a one-stop-shop, which includes:
• An integrated health service
• GPs
• Optometrist
• Physiotherapists
• Community health workers
• Nursing staff
General Manger of the Peel Cluster Paul Gorrick said the funding could not have come at a better time.
“We recently completed the Health Services and Project Definition Plan for Manilla which explores how the redeveloped facility will provide the best integrated care to Manilla patients,” Mr Gorrick said.
“The NSW Government has provided additional funding for Community Health staff to support the HealthOne which means extra physiotherapy and community nursing services for Manilla.”
Hunter New England Health has received strong ongoing support during the planning process from the Manilla Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC), staff of the Health Service and Manilla GPs.
Chair of the Manilla LHAC Richard Hagan said the committee was pleased to learn the project was one step closer having received substantial financial backing.
“We’ve seen how this model of care is successfully working in other small communities so we’re 100 per cent behind this plan. It will be Manilla’s one-stop health shop with more services out of a single facility,” Mr Hagan said.
Planning for the new health facility will continue to involve extensive consultation with staff, GPs and the Manilla LHAC. The next step is the appointment of a consulting team to plan the construction of the facility
