Endocrinologist starts at Tamworth Hospital

16 June 2008

Tamworth Hospital welcomes the appointment of endocrinologist* Dr Deepali Shirkhedkar.

Dr Shirkhedkar, who began work from the hospital this week, will treat patients with complex conditions relating to the body’s glands and production of hormone.

General Manager of Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals Fergus Fitzsimons said Dr Shirkhedkar’s expertise was a significant addition to Tamworth hospital’s services.

“To my knowledge there has never been a resident endocrinologist in Tamworth so her appointment will greatly improve access to the specialty,” Mr Fitzsimons said.

“Formerly, access to endocrinology in Tamworth was limited. Our local physicians were able to treat most gland-related afflictions but patients with more complex conditions were required to travel to Newcastle or Sydney for treatment.

“Her expertise will bolster Tamworth Hospital’s services and ensure patients receive more comprehensive treatment in their own community.

“We welcome Dr Shirkhedkar and look forward to working with her.”

Dr Shirkhedkar’s work will include the treatment of diabetes, thyroid conditions, bone conditions such as osteoporosis and some reproductive system conditions.

Originally form India, Dr Shirkhedkar studied her basic medical degree at the Gandhi Medical College in Phobal in central India.

She has been training in Australia since 2000 and studied her speciality at Sydney hospitals Concord Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital and Westmead Hospital.

Tamworth’s lifestyle and career opportunities were what attracted Dr Shirkhedkar, and her husband paediatric registrar Dr Prasanna Shirkhedkar, to the community. Dr Prasanna Shirkhedkar is currently finalising his training at Tamworth Hospital and will be offered a paediatric staff specialist position on completion.

They have a two-year-old son, Rohan.

* Endocrinology is the study of the glands and hormones of the body and their related disorders. Glands include the pineal, pituitary, thyroid, thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, ovaries and testes.
