Early works ensure a strong foundation for Narrabri District Health Service

Construction work at Narrabri District Health Service is set to commence this week, following an announcement by NSW Minister for Health Reba Meagher that the successful tender for the early works package has been appointed.

From Thursday, all helicopter transfers will be redirected to Narrabri Airport which will enable early works to commence.

Arrangements are in place with NSW Ambulance to ensure continuity of care and timely transfer of patients between the airport and the health service.

Narrabri District Health Service Manager Sharon Simpson said the works would take approximately four months, and would, in time, mean some access changes for the community.

“The early works package will entail undertaking all the preparation work which is needed before construction of the main building can begin,” Ms Simpson said.

“The timing of some early works, such as access changes or changed traffic flow is yet to be confirmed, however, as each new phase of works is undertaken, we will ensure that the community is well-informed of any access changes, or contingency plans which may be in place to ensure the health service operates under business-as-usual arrangements,” she said.

Early works at the site will include:

• Relocation of the site’s emergency generator
• Establishment of a new, pole-mounted sub station
• The relocation of medical gasses supply
• The installation of temporary power to staff accommodation
• The demolition of the old stores building and maintenance workshop
• The demolition of disused storage sheds
• The installation of pressure reduction water valves in preparation for the new facility
• Some road closures, including the establishment of a new temporary access road
• Construction of new staff and visitor parking
• The establishment of safe construction perimeters and fencing for the main project
• The helicopter service will be landing at Narrabri Airport while early works are undertaken

“A majority of the work will not impact the community, but will involve clearing space on the existing site so that we can fully accommodate all the requirements of the new building,” Ms Simpson said.

“As the site preparation progresses, it may be necessary to implement some access changes. We will endeavour to keep the community fully informed during this time, and any changes will be clearly signposted on site,” she said.

“I apologise for any inconvenience these early works may cause staff, visitors and the community, and thank these groups in advance for their patience.

“This is now a really thrilling time for us all to watch the redevelopment progress. I hope that the community shares this excitement as we move toward a new District Health Service for Narrabri,” Ms Simpson said.
