Emergency medicine conference first for Newcastle
The expertise of Hunter New England Health staff in emergency medicine and related fields will be showcased this week when John Hunter Hospital hosts a major educational conference for the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM).
John Hunter Hospital Director of Emergency Medicine Dr Carolyn Hullick said the ACEM Winter Symposium 2008 (2 – 4 July) is the first College meeting to be held in Newcastle and the first of its kind to include nursing speakers.
“We’re proud to bring this year’s symposium to Newcastle and to share the skills and knowledge of our medical and nursing staff with delegates from across Australia and New Zealand,” Dr Hullick said.
“Given the challenges in staffing emergency departments, the conference is an excellent opportunity to showcase the innovative work we’re doing to improve patient outcomes and attract staff to Hunter New England Health.”
Dr Hullick said the conference has a strong focus on doctors who are training to become specialists in emergency medicine.
“Our trainees are the workforce of the future and we’re committed to supporting them in their education and research,” Dr Hullick said.
“This symposium is an opportunity for trainees to present their research papers to College examiners and to attend presentations by leading experts about emergency medicine and related issues.”
Conference sessions presented by Hunter New England Health staff include:
- The National Institute of Clinical Studies (NCIS) Project: an Australia-wide collaborative to improve emergency department care. NCIS’ current project is to improve time to pain relief in the emergency department
- “ED Redesign – Patient and Carer Experience”: a project that involves staff, patients and carers working together to improve the experience of people requiring emergency department care at John Hunter and Manning Hospitals
- The international medical graduate in the emergency department
- Trauma – a case study and hypothetical session
- The nurse practitioner role in the emergency department
- Aged care coordination in the emergency department
- Update on anti-venom - including a live snake and spider milking demonstration by the Australia Reptile Park.
Hunter New England Health staff will also conduct an accredited basic emergency ultrasound course and courses in the care of the sick neonate and toxicology as pre-conference workshops.
