Prestigious Fellowship for emergency specialist
A Hunter New England Health emergency medicine specialist has won a prestigious Fellowship and a unique opportunity to spend the next 12 months working with leading health practitioners, researchers and policy experts in the USA.
John Hunter Hospital Director of Emergency Medicine Dr Carolyn Hullick has been appointed as a Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice and she is headed to New York next month to begin the next phase of her career.
“This is an exciting opportunity to gain an international perspective on health care practice and policy and to develop valuable contacts for ongoing collaboration,” Dr Hullick said.
A major component of Dr Hullick’s Fellowship is to conduct a policy-oriented research study ‘Improving the emergency care journey for elderly adults’.
“The end product of the Fellowship is a peer-reviewed journal article or policy report for Health Ministers and other high-level policy audiences,” Dr Hullick said.
“My intention is to build on the work I’ve been doing on projects to improve the health care experience of older people and people requiring emergency department care, and bring my learnings back to Hunter New England Health.”
Hunter New England Health Director of Operations Acute Networks Michael Di Rienzo said being awarded a Harkness Fellowship is a significant achievement.
“Dr Hullick’s success in winning the Fellowship is a credit to her dedication to emergency medicine and to improving the health care system generally,” Mr Di Rienzo said.
“It really is fantastic to have staff of this calibre working within our organisation and wonderful that they return to share their knowledge with their colleagues here.”
Harkness Fellowships are an initiative of the Commonwealth Fund in New York whose mission is to promote a high performing health care system that achieves better access, improved quality and safety, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable.
