Tamworth Hospital sounds safety warning for music festival

January 16

Visitors to this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival are being urged to follow a few simple tips to ensure they remain safe and healthy during their stay in the region.

Hunter New England Health’s Health Protection Manager Peter Massey said simple precautions can allow visitors to let down their hair and enjoy all the Country Music Festival has to offer.

“January is typically a very hot month in Tamworth. To cope effectively with the heat we recommend people cover up, apply and reapply lots of sunscreen, wear a hat and drink two – four litres of water each day,” Mr Massey said.

“Visitors travelling to the festival who require prescription medication should remember to bring it with them and ensure it is taken in accordance with their normal routine.

“It is important that people remember to practice basic hygiene such as regularly washing hands before handling food and after using the toilet to avoid contamination and illness.

“If drinking alcohol we strongly recommend you do so in moderation. We recommend anyone drinking alcohol at the festival use the 2:1 ratio – one glass of water for every two alcoholic drinks.

“By following these basic steps visitors will be able to enjoy the festival without the need for medical assistance.”

Mr Massey said Tamworth Hospital was well prepared for the influx of people coming to the region for the Country Music Festival.

“Significant additional resources have been allocated to the hospital to ensure our high-level provision of care is maintained during this period of increased demand,” Mr Massey said.

A brochure compiled by Hunter New England Health comprising health tips and important contact details for local health services and pharmacies has been distributed to Tamworth Hospital, St John First Aid sites, Tamworth Information Centre, Tamworth Regional Council and various accommodation venues.
