Praise for Emergency Department at Tamworth Hospital

30 January, 2008

More than 1200 patients were cared for quickly and smoothly at Tamworth Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) during the Country Music Festival this year.

Tamworth Hospital Director of Emergency, Dr Nick Ryan, congratulated the ED staff who handled the festival workload extremely well and provided an excellent level of care to the community.

This year there was a decrease in dehydration, heat stroke and gastroenteritis which Dr Ryan attributed to the cooler weather during the festival.

“The weather was kind to us this year and it was good to see people listened to our advice about staying healthy during the festival,” Dr Ryan said.

Dr Ryan said waiting times were kept short during the festival thanks to a number of measures implemented to cope with the predicted influx of patients.

Extra medical officers, emergency physicians and nurses were on duty around the clock during the festival to ensure people were treated quickly and efficiently,” Dr Ryan said.

“Also, over the busiest days, additional nursing staff were in place to ‘fast track’ patients with minor injuries and illnesses through the ED.”

General Manager of Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals, Fergus Fitzsimons, said many people work behind the scenes each year to ensure visitors and locals enjoy the festival without the need for medical assistance.

“I would like to congratulate the team at Tamworth Hospital, along with staff from Tamworth Community Health and Population Health for their efforts and for achieving such great results,” Mr Fitzsimons said.
