Surprise 90th Birthday celebration for dedicated volunteer

Norma Williams, an active and dedicated volunteer at John Hunter Hospital/Royal Newcastle Centre, will celebrate her 90th Birthday today (Friday 29 August) with a surprise celebration with her fellow John Hunter Site Carers.

Norma’s party will be attended by her daughter Dr Di Pacey who is a Staff Specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine, her son-in-law Dr Geoff Booth who is the Area Director of Rehabilitation, and two great grand children.

Manager of Volunteer Services Vicki Dunn said Norma is very deserving of the special event which, as well as celebrating her birthday milestone, is a way to acknowledge the hard work and commitment Norma brings to her volunteering.

“Norma began volunteering at the Royal Newcastle Hospital on 2 February 1985, before transferring to the John Hunter Site Carers,” Ms Dunn said.

“She generally attends the three relative accommodation units each Friday to ensure all is well and in order before returning to the volunteer workroom to look for her next job.

“Norma generously dedicates her time to the hospital and is always quick to put up her hand when there is work to be done.

“Norma is an inspiration to her fellow carers and is truly a fine example of the benefits of keeping active in retirement.”

The John Hunter Site Carers is the largest group of volunteers servicing John Hunter Hospital/Royal Newcastle Centre and includes more than 160 people, ranging in age from 16 to 90.

Volunteers are an indispensable asset to Hunter New England Health, contributing to the care and comfort of patients and their families during often difficult times and providing the driving force behind much needed fundraising for equipment.
