Starlight Day – supporting children’s services
29 April 2008
This Friday, 2 May is Starlight Day, when Bingara Community Health nurses will be selling merchandise in the local area. Funds raised will be directed back to children’s wards in local hospitals to provide positive distraction for their young patients.
Bingara community nurse Sharon Price, said each year there are over 600,000 children admitted to hospital across Australia, and the Starlight Foundation is well known in the work they do to reduce the stress of those hospitals stays.
"Young people experiencing pain, loneliness and isolation are very grateful for the distraction services available from Starlight," she said.
Sharon said Starlight claims to reach one in every three sick children, despite their bold aim to brighten the lives of every seriously ill and hospitalised child and their families around Australia.
The sort of programs they sponsor include:
· Starlight Express Rooms - at seven major metropolitan hospitals across Australia with Captain Starlight as the catalyst for fun, including John Hunter Hospital in our area.
· Starlight Wish-granting for 4-18 year old’s who have a critical, chronic or terminal illness
· Starlight Express Van - where Captain Starlight travels to remote, regional or metropolitan hospitals around Australia, such as Tamworth, Armidale and Inverell.
· Starlight Escapes – provides tickets to events, shows and activities.
· Starlight Fun Centres - mobile entertainment units with computer games, CD’s, DVD’s, etc.
Sharon said the Starlight Foundation relies entirely on the support of the community and the generosity of supporters to exist, so every dollar helps!
"So please assist in bringing a little bit of magic to a sick child," she said.
