Speech Pathology symposium benefits child health
Children across the Hunter New England Health region will have access to the latest speech pathology treatment, following a two-day workshop to be held for Hunter New England Health speech pathology staff in Tamworth next Monday and Tuesday.
The workshop will be presented by Dr Caroline Bowen, who is internationally renowned for her expertise in the area of children’s speech development.
Speech Pathologist for Hunter New England Health Jenni Simpson said rural speech pathologists would learn the latest speech pathology techniques for children with speech difficulties, during the course of the workshop.
“The workshop is designed to be practical and interactive, and will assist clinicians to provide a service based on the latest available evidence and current best practice” Ms Simpson said.
“This is a really exciting opportunity for rural clinicians to access world class professional development in our own backyard.
“Learning opportunities of this calibre are generally only ever available in major metropolitan centres, often making it difficult for rural speech pathologists to access such education,” she said.
Funding for the workshop has been made available through the Strengthening Rural Allied Health Program, which was provided by the NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services and Teaching.
Hunter New England Area Director for Allied Health David Rhodes said the funding would be used to provide professional development activities for all allied health disciplines.
“This workshop will enable over 50 Hunter New England Health speech pathologists to be updated in the latest treatment techniques for children with speech difficulties” he said.
“This particular workshop is a high priority due to the fact that children with this diagnosis make up a large percentage of the work that our speech pathologists do,” Mr Rhodes said.
The partnership between Hunter New England Health and the NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services and Teaching will ensure that rural clinicians remain up-to-date with the latest developments in their field, and continue to provide high quality assessment and therapy services.
