Men of Gunnedah take up the challenge – put your body over the pits

08 April 2008

Most men take an interest in maintaining their vehicles. How about their bodies?

The challenge is on for the men of Gunnedah to see if they are still roadworthy and put their bodies through a thorough health check provided by Hunter New England Health’s Pit Stop program.

The Pit Stop is a free health check program for men run by Hunter New England Health.

Gunnedah Health Service will conduct a Pit Stop at the Gunnedah Show on Saturday 19 April. Gunnedah Deputy Mayor Adam Marshall has shown support for the initiative by volunteering being one of the first men to have a free check-up at the show.

Gunnedah Community Nurse Susan Helps said men are statistically more likely to die of any selected cause than women.

“Pit Stop likens parts of the male anatomy to an engine. Men can have their oil levels (blood pressure) tested, spare tyre (girth) checked and asked if they check their ball bearings (testicles) regularly,” Susan said.

“Using a mechanical concept brings an element of humour to men’s health and removes it from the clinical setting.

“We are making ourselves easily accessible to the community by setting up the Pit Stop at the Gunnedah Show. We want to see as many men as possible visit our team on Saturday 19 April and take advantage of this very simple and effective health initiative.

“Come and see if you pass the pits with flying colours or need follow-up maintenance work.”

The Pit Stop program will run at the Gunnedah Show on Saturday 19 April between 10am and 4pm. All health checks are free of charge.
