Information sessions for carers start in May

27 April 2007

Are you a carer who feels like you’re all alone?

Support is available through Hunter New England Health’s EDuCARE Support Service in the form of free information sessions starting in early May.

“Carers are usually family members or friends who provide support to children or adults who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or who are frail aged,” EDuCARE Support Service Manager Rose Blue said.

“We are inviting carers from this region to attend our next series of six free information sessions beginning in May, which provide carers with helpful information,” she said.

Carers can be parents, partners, brothers, sisters, friends, neighbours or children of any age, who may care for someone a few hours a week, or all day every day.

Hunter New England Health’s EDuCARE Support Service provides education and support to carers and their families.

“Caring for someone who depends on your help and support on a regular basis is fulfilling but can be tiring,” Ms Blue said.

“Carers can find themselves quite isolated because they no longer have the time, finances or energy to nurture themselves,” Ms Blue said.

EDuCARE Support Service addresses some of the problems that carers encounter through free educational and support sessions.

Topics include stress management, practical skills for carers, medical conditions, emotional aspects of caring, community resources, a carer’s experience, legal issues and many more.

The two-hour information sessions will be held each Tuesday afternoon commencing on 8 May and continuing to 12 June.

They will be held at the Charlestown Community Room, Charlestown Mall between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Carers wishing to attend should book their place by calling Kathy on 4921 4895 to RSVP for catering purposes as a light lunch is provided.
