Gloucester Hospital celebrating 50 years of providing quality health care
20 April 2007
Since it opened on Saturday 1 June 1957, Gloucester Hospital has provided quality health care and wellness to the community.
On Friday 1 June 2007, the hospital will celebrate 50 years of service. Staff of Gloucester Hospital have arranged a number of celebrations to mark the occasion and are inviting the community to help them celebrate.
Service Manager of Gloucester Hospital Peter Barber said this was a significant milestone for the hospital and the community are encouraged to be a part of the celebrations.
“Over the past 50 years, Gloucester Hospital has meant many things to many people. From 1-2 June, the hospital will gather staff, patients and the community to celebrate 50 years of improving patient’s lives,” said Mr Barber
“On Friday 1 June, a morning tea and official ceremony will take place in the grounds of Gloucester Hospital.
“A variety of displays, entertainment and an art competition are planned for the day, as well as an official 50 year ceremony.
“On Saturday 2 June, staff and the community are invited to kick up their heels at a ball, which will be held at the Gloucester RSL Club.
“We are also running an art competition to commemorate the anniversary and this is a great excuse for us to enjoy and appreciate the artistic talents of the Gloucester people.”
When the hospital was first opened in 1957 by Governor of NSW, His Excellency Lieutenant-General Sir John Northcott, it was a 60 bed facility that was divided into men’s and women’s wards, isolation wards and an obstetric ward.
Today the 80 bed hospital provides surgical, general medicine, high and low level aged care nursing and community health services to the Gloucester community.
“People in Gloucester are wonderful supporters of our hospital, and community support remains the key to our success,” said Mr Barber.
“We’re extremely proud of the 50 years of commitment to the care and well-being of the people we serve—patients, families and employees.
“While medical care and technology have changed significantly since we opened our doors in 1957, we must always remember what we’re here for—we’re here to take care of our patients and to provide them with the highest quality healthcare.”
The Gloucester Advocate will publish a commemorative feature during the week of the anniversary. All members of the community are encouraged to submit their stories, memories and photographs for inclusion in the publication.
