Service to remember Organ Donors

Organ donation is a selfless decision that can save or transform the lives of up to eight people.

To celebrate this legacy, an ecumenical service will be held this Sunday to give thanks and remember those who have donated organs.

Hunter New England Health Organ and Tissue Donor Co-ordinator Nicole Coleman said the service was held annually to give those whose lives have been touched by organ donation an opportunity to reflect.

“Each year we hold the service to give the families and friends of organ donors the opportunity to remember their loved one and the amazing legacy of life they gave to the organ recipient,” Ms Coleman said

“The service is also one of thanksgiving for members of the community and their families who have received an organ donation.”

As part of the service two people with personal experiences of organ donation will share their stories.

“Lisa Rowe and Lauren O’Brien will remember their aunt Kathy Hunt who donated her organs to save and improve the lives of five others,” Ms Coleman said.

“Ann Stein who works at John Hunter Hospital as a Recipient Coordinator will also read out some messages from those who received organs in the past.”

Sunday’s Service will conclude with a ceremonial naming of a star in the constellation of Phoenix, which represents rising from the ashes and ongoing life, an appropriate symbol of organ donation.  The star will be visible in the sky on the night of the service.

Members of the community whose lives have been touched by organ donation are invited to attend the service.

The service will be held on Sunday 25 October 2009 at 2pm at Christ Church Cathedral, Church Street, Newcastle.
