Seminars to help parents keep teens and toddlers on track
21 October 2009
Parents will have a chance to access some valuable information and opinions about guiding their teenagers and toddlers through two very important phases of their life next month.
Staff at Gunnedah Community Health, including Psychologist Laura Summerfield, will be holding a total of four interactive question and answer sessions to support parents as they tackle some big issues of parenting.
“We want Gunnedah district parents to have access to good parenting advice from a range of professionals, including psychologists, teachers, allied health staff and nursing specialists,” Ms Summerfield said.
“These sessions will provide a format where parents can have some of their pressing concerns discussed, and some of their questions considered from different points of view.
“The first two sessions will focus on pre-teenagers and teenagers and how parents can help guide their children through what can be a pivotal period in their life.
“The first session will focus on puberty, the transition to high school, relationships, peer pressure and the use of mobile phones and the internet and the effect of the media. The second will focus on sex, drugs, driving cars, and the risks young people take.”
The third and fourth sessions will focus on how to guide your toddler and preschooler between the ages of two and five.
“These sessions will help you understand how your child learns, and how you can set boundaries and deal with tantrums while supporting healthy self-confidence,” Ms Summerfield said.
“The last session will reveal how you can help your child transition to kindergarten, the importance of understanding speech and language development as well as separation anxiety, immunisations and social play.
The first seminar will be held on Wednesday 28 October at 10am at the Creative Arts Centre, Gunnedah.
If you have a certain question or topic you would like to discuss during one of these sessions please feel free to submit your question prior to the sessions.
