Successful tender for Maitland Emergency Department

19 March 2009

State Member for Maitland Frank Terenzini today was very happy to announce John Holland Pty Ltd as the successful tender bid for the redevelopment of Maitland Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Mr Terenzini said the award of the tender was an important milestone in the project.

“The extension and refurbishment will almost double the size of the current emergency department to help meet the growing demand for services,” Mr Terenzini said.

“I would like to congratulate John Holland Pty Ltd on its tender bid, and look forward to construction on the redevelopment starting soon.”

Maitland’s new emergency department will provide extra treatment spaces, including:
· Acute treatment and resuscitation areas
· Dedicated paediatric treatment spaces
· Increased ambulance unloading area
· Improved amenities for visitors
· Additional areas for isolation and mental health patients
· Decontamination area

John Holland Pty Ltd has previously undertaken a number of major construction projects for Hunter New England Health, including the Royal Newcastle Centre and Hunter Area Pathology Service buildings on the John Hunter Campus, and the redevelopment of John Hunter’s emergency department.

Minister for Health, the Hon. John Della Bosca said this is another example of the Rees Government delivering infrastructure across NSW.

“This new emergency department will help meet the acute health needs of the Maitland community and surrounding region into the future,” Mr Della Bosca said.

The redevelopment involves new building works, including a new front entrance, as well as refurbishment and extension of the existing emergency department.

Mr Terenzini said this is another great win for Maitland with early site works are due to start in April.  The project is expected to be completed in 2010.
