Health staff bring Harmony to the workplace
19 March 2009
Hunter New England Health staff at Cessnock are being invited to dress in their cultural heritage costumes to help celebrate Harmony Day on Friday, 20 March 2009.
Staff along with other community partners – including Cessnock City Council representatives and Northern Settlement Services staff in multicultural attire and – are holding a morning tea at Cessnock District Hospital from 10am to 11am. Local Aboriginal representatives have also been invited.
Organiser and Senior Social Worker with Cessnock-Kurri Kurri Health Service Belinda Latimore said Harmony Day is held each year to celebrate Australia’s diversity.
“Australia is a nation where everyone belongs,” Ms Latimore said.
“Harmony Day is about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
“It is also a chance to celebrate the benefits of living in a multicultural society.
Harmony Day, which is generally celebrated each year on 21 March and organised through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, began 10 years ago, and thousands of schools, community groups and organisations across Australia have hosted events since then.
