Eat better, feel better, move more now!
Health Weight Week (25-31 January 2009)
As many New Year’s resolutions begin to wane and the commitment to eat better and exercise more seems to lose importance, Tamworth dietitians are urging residents to keep up their efforts this week – Healthy Weight Week.
Tamworth Community Health dietitian Kelly Ancuk said the national health initiative couldn’t be scheduled at a better time of the year, reminding us about the importance of preserving good health.
“The number of overweight Australians is increasing with 7.4 million Australians now overweight,” Kelly said.
“That's two thirds of adults and one quarter of our children that are now overweight and obese.
“There are lots of weight loss fads and gimmicks out there but in reality most people that lose weight from these types of diets regain their lost weight quickly, actually dieting themselves fatter over time.
“Successful weight loss needs a life-long commitment to a healthy lifestyle, including eating healthy foods and keeping physically active in a way that you can maintain and enjoy.
You can feel better now by:
• Eating at least two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day
• Choose wholegrain breads and cereals, reduced fat dairy foods and lean meat
• Eating smaller serves
• Drinking water instead of soft drink, juice or sports drinks
• Being physically active for at least 30-60 minutes every day
The week is supported by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) and its Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) members, including Kelly Ancuk.
More information on the week can be found at www.healthyweightweek.com.au or by contacting your local Accredited Practicing Dietitian (ADP).
