Support offered to community members requiring supplementary oxygen

Support offered to community members requiring supplementary oxygen

18 February 2008

Please attribute this statement to Chris Perfrement, Program Coordinator, HACC and Disability Services, Hunter New England Health:

Clients of the Hunter New England Area Health Service (Northern) Home Oxygen Program must meet specific clinical and financial criteria in line with the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) Guidelines, and must have referral from a Sleep Study Physician, GP or Respiratory Physician.

We have assessed the patient’s request for an oxygen cylinder; however the patient does not meet the eligibility criteria.

Only clients who live more than two hours drive from hospital or other emergency care are eligible for the supply of oxygen cylinder from the health service.

Some clients choose to use oxygen cylinders to complement their Oxygen Concentrator, which allows them the flexibility to travel for long distances away from home.

Approved clients are supplied with an oxygen concentrator for home use. Because tThis device concentrates oxygen from the normal air;, therefore oxygen cylinders are no longer necessary for home use.

FreeThe only oClinetClFFreeFF oxygen cylinders concentrators are also available to all clients for up to isone month post discharge from hospital and palliative care clients being cared for in the home. when they can receive oxygen for one month while they apply for an Oxygen Concentrator through the Home Oxygen Program.

The Hunter New England Area Health Service (Northern) Home Oxygen Program supports people in the community who need additional oxygen therapy because of a long term clinical condition, such as respiratory or cardiac diseases.
