Support for Gunnedah residents with depression
28 February 2008
A series of six support classes for people with depression will begin in Gunnedah in mid-March run by Hunter New England Health.
The free classes will explore cognitive behaviour therapy for people aged between 18 and 75 who are suffering from depression.
Psychologist for the Peel Mental Health Team Jodie Black said depression is a common experience, but is very treatable.
“Gunnedah residents who are suffering from depression can be referred to these free classes by their General Practitioner (GP),” Ms Black said.
“Family and friends should encourage people with depression to seek professional help. If someone is suffering from depression, they may be feeling tired, irritable, angry, worthless or hopeless,” she said.
“They may also be finding it hard to sleep, eat regularly, concentrate and enjoy things they usually like – or they may be finding it hard to control their moods.”
Cognitive behaviour therapy involves learning how to overcome thinking processes that can lead to depression and assist people to reactivate their lives – and many studies have proven it an effective treatment for people with mild or moderate depression.
“Local GPs are encouraged to refer their patients who would benefit from these classes to Peel Mental Health Service in time for them to join the classes,” Ms Black said.
“Gunnedah residents who think they may benefit from these classes should talk to their GP about a possible referral.”
The classes will run for six consecutive weeks, with two separate classes to be held each week.
They will be held every Tuesday from 2pm until 3.30pm commencing 18 March 2008 and every Wednesday from 10am until 11.30am commencing 19 March 2008.
Classes will be held at Gunnedah Community Health Centre. People wanting more information can contact Jodie Black by telephoning 02 6767 7910.
