Fitting farewell for popular counsellor

Fitting farewell for popular counsellor

25 February 2008

Amanda Akers has received an accolade from her former colleagues at Armidale Community Health, by being voted as their Employee of the Year for 2007.

Hunter New England Health Nurse Unit Manager for Drug and Alcohol Services Lyn Gardner said she remembers Amanda coming to the health service as a keen university graduate.

"Amanda was able to achieve her Clinical Psychology status under supervision from other psychologists on the team, and then was more than happy to provide that clinical supervision to a range of intern psychologists within the organisation.

"She was always busy - providing individual counselling to clients in Armidale, Guyra and Walcha, as well as providing education such as the Drive Driver Program within each of those communities.

"Amanda was an enthusiastic participant in O Week activities at the university and within Drug Action Week, never letting an opportunity go by to put the word out about harm reduction strategies related to drug and alcohol use," Ms Gardner said.

After seven years working at Armidale Community Health as a psychologist, primarily within the Drug and Alcohol Service, Amanda Akers took the brave move earlier this year to launch full-time into her private clinical psychology practice.

Acting Tablelands Cluster General Manager Cathryn Jones said the fact that Ms Akers had been voted as Employee of the Year by her peers at Armidale Community Health reflected the high esteem in which she is still held.

"Praise offered for Amanda included her ‘uncompromisingly high standards’, ‘being highly professional’ and ‘treating everyone with dignity’.

"We wish her well with her new practice and thank her most sincerely for the work she has done in this community. She will be sorely missed," Mrs Jones said.

Amanda Akers will return to Community Health to accept her award at the first monthly staff meeting of Armidale Community Health on 26 February 2008.
