Armidale kids breathe easy

22 February, 2008

Armidale Hospital will receive an additional respiratory humidifier to combat childhood respiratory infections thanks to a kind donation on Monday (25 February).

Armidale parent Rob Hale decided to launch a bike riding fundraiser to buy the piece of equipment after his nine-week-old son, Zachary, was admitted to Armidale Hospital last winter with the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Rob’s donation, worth $3000, will mean the children’s ward will have three humidifiers on hand this winter - when demand for the machines is at a peak.

“During Zachary’s illness, the staff were brilliant and I hope by donating the machine, staff will be even better equipped to treat children,” Rob said.

Armidale Hospital Children’s Ward Nursing Manager Anna Broadbent said the humidifier would be of huge additional benefit to children battling respiratory infections.

“The humidifier will help during the winter months when childhood respiratory infections are at a high,” Anna said.

“If we treat the child with the warm, humid air in the early stages of the sickness we can often stop an infection from worsening.

“We’d like to extend our appreciation to Rob for his thoughtful donation.”

General Manager of Tamworth and Armidale hospitals Fergus Fitzsimons passed on his appreciation to Rob and all who helped with the fundraiser.

“Armidale Hospital would like to thank Rob and the many people and businesses who pitched in to donate to the cause,” Mr Fitzsimons said.

“The Armidale community has always been very supportive of their local hospital and it’s wonderful to see that tradition continuing.”

Rob will present the respiratory humidifier to Armidale Hospital on Monday at 2pm. Media are invited to attend.
