Morisset Hospital celebrating 100 year of caring

20 February 2009

A community fair, photographic competition, cricket match and celebratory dinner are just some of the events to be staged to mark the centenary of Morisset Hospital planned for 9 May.

Since its foundation, the Morisset Hospital has played a major role in the local community, from the opening of the first building, completed in May 1909, to the present.

Working to the theme of ‘Morisset Hospital: One Hundred Years of Caring’, a planning committee has been formed to co-ordinate celebrations for this major milestone.

Area Director of Hunter New England Mental Health Dr Dinesh Arya said the hospital has seen a lot of changes since its early beginnings and has always strived to be at the forefront of mental health services for the wider community.

“In that time many, many people have contributed to this effort and there are many more who have benefitted from it,” Dr Arya said.

“We think it’s fitting that we commemorate our past here and our connection to the people of the local area.

“The events and activities we are planning for the coming months will be an opportunity to acknowledge and strengthen those connections and celebrate around a common cause.”

Dr Arya said the committee would welcome interested members of the local community to support the celebrations to help ensure this significant occasion is appropriately commemorated.

“I am sure there are many enthusiastic members of the local community, businesses or service clubs who would be able to provide the benefit of their experience and expertise in assisting us to mark this occasion as befitting the role Morisset Hospital has played in its 100 years of service.”

If you would like to contribute to the occasion by assisting the committee, you can telephone the secretary, Ron McKelvie, on 4973 0279 during business hours or email him at Ron.McKelvie@hnehealth.nsw.gov.au

Morisset Hospital is a 130-bed non-acute mental health facility. Its services include Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Neuropsychiatry (which provides care for people with acquired brain injury that affects their mental health) and Specialist Mental Health Services for Older People.

The hospital is located on about 50 hectares on the shores of Lake Macquarie near the township of Morisset.
