Armidale Hospital says thanks to volunteers
26 February 2009
Armidale Hospital will pay tribute to its volunteers as part of NSW Health Volunteer Appreciation Day tomorrow (Friday 27 February).
The day is celebrated each year to recognise volunteers, such as Armidale’s John and Barbara Lawrence, who give their time to local health facilities.
The couple has been volunteering at the hospital for many years, but for the past few they have been dedicating time to a daily tidy-up the hospital grounds, picking up litter to keep the gardens beautiful.
“A few years ago we went to the emergency department and we looked over the side of the entrance ramp and saw there was junk everywhere,” Mr Lawrence said.
“Since then we’ve been doing a daily walk-through of the hospital grounds to pick up the rubbish.”
Mr Lawrence said it was a love of the hospital that was the motivation for their daily clean-up.
“We’re not looking for recognition – we just love the hospital,” Mr Lawrence said.
Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals General Manager Fergus Fitzsimons said it was the dedication of volunteers like John and Barbara that kept the hospital a point of pride for the community.
“Armidale Hospital has over 90 volunteers who help us in a lot of different ways,” Mr Fitzsimons said.
“Our volunteers fundraise, participate in the Local Health Advisory Committee and Ladies Auxiliary, organise social functions, help in our wards and keep our gardens in top condition.
“They all have an amazing willingness to give their time, so I’m pleased to be able to thank all of our volunteers with a small token of our appreciation this Friday.”
Armidale Hospital will thank its volunteers with a morning tea at 10am tomorrow, (27 February – NSW Health Volunteer Appreciation Day).
Armidale Hospital volunteers, including John and Barbara Lawrence, will be available for photographs and interviews at the morning tea.
