Tamworth JMO training makes the grade

17 December 2008

Tamworth Hospital has been judged as a good place to train Junior Medical Officers (JMOs), after passing its three-year accreditation from the NSW Institute of Medical Education and Training (IMET) with flying colours this week.

The IMET accreditation assessed Tamworth Hospital’s ability to train, educate, supervise and support its JMOs.

Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals General Manager Fergus Fitzsimons said the hospital had received positive results.

“As part of the accreditation, the Institute spoke with our JMOs and found they speak very highly of their training experiences at the hospital,” Mr Fitzsimons said.

“Our senior supervising staff work hard to ensure our JMOs become well-educated, skilled doctors and it’s great to learn the trainees appreciate our senior doctors’ help.”

JMO Alex Honey, from Sydney, said her first year in the profession at Tamworth Hospital had been invaluable.

“I hadn’t been to Tamworth before my interview to come here as a JMO, so I didn’t know what to expect, but the staff are very supportive and it’s a great learning environment,” Alex said.

"Because I’m one of just eight interns there are more opportunities available to gain experience, and I’ve been able to do a lot of procedures this year, particularly in the emergency department.”

Alex will continue her training at Tamworth Hospital in 2009 as a Resident Medical Officer and plans to undertake physician training in 2010.

She hopes to later specialise in rheumatology, to treat conditions such as arthritis, gout and lupus.

Tamworth and Armidale Hospitals General Manager Fergus Fitzsimons and JMO Dr Alex Honey will be available for interviews/photographs at 11.30am tomorrow (18 December 2008).
