Patients benefit from $23,000 donation

22 December 2008

Dialysis patients at Singleton Hospital have benefited from a generous donation of $23,000 from Singleton Lions and Lioness clubs.

Singleton Hospital Dialysis Unit Clinical Nurse Specialist Christine Shannon said the donation had enabled the purchase of four new specially designed dialysis chairs that have improved the comfort and care of the regular patients.

“Our dialysis patients visit the unit three times a week for their treatment and each treatment session takes hours,” Ms Shannon said.

“The new chairs make the world of difference to the patients’ comfort and independence, and improves their treatment. The patients get to better control their own environment – they are in that chair for up to six hours sometimes, and that is a long time.

“This is a wonderful, generous donation.

“The Singleton Lions and Lioness clubs have a long association with the Dialysis Unit throughout its 21 years of operation and this donation is yet another example of the clubs’ community involvement and generous spirit of giving to others,” she said.

Singleton Lions Club secretary Barry Bartrop said the donation was a combined effort from his club, the Singleton Lioness Club and the Lions Clubs NSW/ACT Public Healthcare Foundation.

Mr Bartrop said the Lioness Club were instrumental in helping to establish the Dialysis Unit, and the Lions Club had previously provided equipment, including a defibrillator.

“It has been a long association,” Mr Bartrop said.

“We were able to answer the call and are happy to have been able to continue to assist the unit.”

The new power-operated chairs are able to be more easily adjusted for height and seating or reclining positions, are easier to manoeuvre and operate, and have a range of additional safety and care features.

Mr Shannon said the previous chairs are now being well utilised in the hospital’s Day Surgery Unit.
